Sprite revision discussion.


I've mentioned revising the sprites in the tileset and I want some input.

Would you rather have the sprites stay the current 16x16 or have them 8 pixels taller? The reasoning is it makes it easier to give the sprites more dynamic poses, since currently the head on the existing sprites take up most of the space. Here's an example that I've experimented with.

could we see a quick example of the new character with background (world) tiles?

16x16 would be thee way to go in keeping with the "look" of the GBC Zelda Games. I'm thoroughly enjoying the work you've put out.

You'd definitely have to rework your whole set to accommodate the change to 24x24 sprites.

as an aside, I do like your "mystic" tileset. It was exactly what I needed at the point I am in in my development.

Regardless of your decision, I look forward to see where you go with this set.

The 16x16 sprites are more authentic to the original Gameboy games, but those 16x24 sprites good pretty good too. I'd say just include both if you can, but I understand that is a lot more work.

as I said before, the new 24x24 looks great but I do think it would fit the 16x16 world fine. many tile sets do larger character sprites but stick to 16x16 environment and it looks fine. maybe doors if any looks weird with it!

Looking at the hero sprite, what state are the 8 frames between the walk d/u/r/l and push d/u/r/l?

24x24 looks nice however you will need to rework the rest of the tile set to match the increased height.

Really cool! Her legs look a little funny to me in the forward/backward animations, but besides that I think she's the superior sprite. Will you be able to adapt the rest of the tileset to match it?

Taller sprites have a much better aesthetic appeal, there's simply no comparison. As others have pointed out, 16x16 sprites are already ubiquitous, with even sprite generators available for this size.

I prefer taller sprites, the 16x16 is very constrained, and mostly you get a very chibi look which I think is overused on itch.io. I really like your example. But I guess you have to redo doors/entrances for the taller character size.

The new sprite is really well done, did you try the overall render on the current tileset design or are you planning on adapting it?

the new player spite I LOVE, so taller I say! but the world can stay 16x16, right? not that I'm against 24x24 world as well
